Description:
The impact of disasters on individuals and communities has been studied and applied to many areas of our society, yet we as local psychotherapists have had limited opportunity to explore how it applies to us. As the risk of local and widespread disasters increases, the time to expand our understanding is now. Recent disasters give us a chance to explore our role in our profession in response to current and emergent needs. Join other clinicians in this opportunity to think critically about the short term and long range needs of individuals, families, and communities in disasters as we apply those to what we already know and where our growing edges may be.
Educational Goals:
This workshop is designed to give a scaffolding for viewing disasters as it begins to connect the role of psychotherapists in the community to the larger systems of disaster response and recovery. It provides the opportunity to discover what we may already be doing and apply it intentionally to helping people and communities rebuild and recover.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this presentation participants will:
- Name the phases of the Disaster Management Cycle and Traumatic Stress Response in connection to the work of non-responder psychotherapists.
- Identify vulnerable populations and special needs in disasters.
- Utilize examples of intentionally implementing theoretical.
