Buffet Luncheon, Member Meeting and a Presentation by

John Sovec, MA, LMFT

FUSION ACADEMY PASADENA

Working with the LGBTQ community offers clinicians an opportunity to explore many facets of the life spectrum with their clients and together they can delve into what it mean to live a fully realized life as part of this diverse and colorful community. It is also vital for therapists to understand the influences of a hetero- normative society on the development and emotional balance of LGBTQ people as well as how to best support these clients as they travel through the challenges of the living as part of an identified minority.

This highly interactive workshop will provide an overview of the unique needs of this population, assist clinicians in building definitions of gender and sexual orientation, understand family and community dynamics, and develop tools to better assist their LGBTQ clients.

Learning Objectives:
  • Build awareness of the effect of coming out process on development and attachment.
  • Utilize the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid to develop effective treatment plans and strategies for working with LGBTQ clients.
  • Assess the effects of community and family based hetero-centric systems and biases within the family unit on LGBTQ clients.
  • Develop respectful language and vocabulary.
  • Apply therapeutic concepts developed during the workshop to the clinical setting with respect to family dynamics, cultural expectations, and social constructs.
