"Understanding and Diagnosing Problematic Sexual Behaviors"

Jackson Sousa, LMFT, CSAT-S, CATC-IV, CST

The explosion of the Internet availability in the past decade has changed the way sex addiction is played out. Cybersex is any form of sexual expression that is accessed through the computer. Cybersex is widely accessible, inexpensive, legal, available in the privacy of one's home, apparently anonymous, and does not put the user at direct risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Cybersex is to sex addiction what crack cocaine has been to cocaine addiction. It is easy to obtain, can be rapidly progressive, and can convert people who did not previously have a significant addictive problem. This newfound source of pleasure becomes a trap that is extremely difficult to be extracted out of, and can be a destructive factor in an individual’s personal, family, and work life.

Here are some current statistics about the pornography industry:
  • US porn revenues top $13 billion annually, (which is larger than Hollywood box office revenues all combined);
  • Worldwide revenues exceed $97 billion.
  • The average age of 1st exposure to porn is 11 years old.
  • Apx. 20% of men and 12% of women admit to accessing porn at work
  • Apx. 80% of all 15 to 17-year-olds report multiple exposures to hard-core porn
This presentation will help the clinician:
  1. Understand how, as a “brain disease”, addictions manifest themselves through compulsive behaviors.
  2. Recognize the relationship between companion addictions and their parallel patterns.
  3. Explore the architecture of sexual addictions and identify common features they share with other addictions
  4. Identify emerging problems in relationships (i.e. avoiding sex and intimacy, erectile dysfunction, etc…), as a result of compulsive use of pornography and participating in other sexual compulsive behaviors.
