Understanding the Disorder"

SGV-CAMFT Networking Brunch and Presentation

Mary DeVan LCSW

Mary DeVan, LCSW

In the ten years Mary has worked with hoarding there has been a substantial shift in the way professionals view the disorder, leading to the new diagnosis being included in the DSM 5. It is a very complex, complicated disorder that is ego-syntonic and difficult to treat. In this workshop Mary will review:
  1. the definition and prevalence
  2. the continuum of severity
  3. the hoarding matrix
  4. identify those at risk and holistic concerns
  5. etiologies of the disorder and psychodynamics of the individual
  6. therapeutic treatments, skills and abilities needed to serve this population
  7. resources and referrals for therapists and clients.
By attending this workshop you will know if you have the skills and abilities to work with hoarders.

Speaker's Bio:

Mary DeVan, LCSW, received her MSW in 1972 from The School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, LCSW in 1975. In 2004 Mary opened a private practice in Pasadena, CA, specializing in clutter and hoarding. She offers innovative programs and workshops for her clients. She has added “Rapid Resolution Therapy” as a treatment tool that addresses the trauma that is often a factor in this disorder.

Mary offers training for other clinicians in the local area. Mary has been a member of LA County’s Hoarding Task force since 2002. As such, she has helped plan the training forums and has presented as well.

Prior to private practice, Mary worked 25 years for LA County, which included child welfare, health services and forensic social work. All these jobs offered opportunities for group work, which is Mary’s preferred treatment modality for those who clutter and hoard. Six years of employment at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena brought Mary back to the city where she began as a social worker many years before. Her connection to Pasadena, professionally, is why she has her practice there. She is located at 711 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena, CA 91101.
